Hi, I'm Mike

A tech & computerscience enthousiast and a network/cybersec engineering student at the Hogent University college in Ghent, Belgium.

The purpose of this website is to allow my potential new employer to get to know me a little bit better. To highlight myself, my experience, and who I am as a person

Whoami

This is a exciting question. Who am I? Besides the fact that this is also a Linux command, I find it hard to answer it. Because who am I really?

This is something I sometimes think about and i'm gonna try and answer it as good as possible. I'm a 33 year old man, born and raised in the city of Ghent. I got my first computer with Windows XP when I was 11. This was my starting point in my interests in computers. I started making HTML websites, started with Photoshop and de-re-assembling the computer to get to know how it worked.

Somehow later on I took a different path and started studying Graphic Design. In 2012 I started working in the Volvo Trucks Plant in Ghent as a Assembly worker. I had great collegues and the job was OK, so I stayed there for quite some time. But then Covid hit the entire world. We all needed to stay home for a while and I got thinking: Is this the career path I really want? Do I want to make trucks for the rest of my life? A few months later I got accepted as a remote student at the University College Hogent. This is what I still do today. Because it's a remote learning path, I get to choose how many courses i take. This means I'll do a lot longer over the degree, but I can still work in the factory at the same time.

Since april 2023 I've got a little baby boy named Finn. He makes it a lot harder to study, but surprisingly I still manage to finish the courses.

Now you have a little backstory, but still, who am I?

At work, I'm a someone who likes to laugh, get the mood good, when the job gets done. In stressfull situations I like to be quiet, to concentrate myself on the job.

I am someone who wants to be the best at the job and motivate myself and others to learn from eachother. IT is a branch where you have continue to learn and get to know new technologies and developments.

My friends would call me a guy who's always up for a joke but serious when it needs to be. I love to help my friends, talking with them, giving advice about life. It's just someone who I am.

I'm stubborn, but in a good way. If I can't find a solution for a problem, I'll keep trying until I found the problem or solution.

I love making music in the little spare time i have left. Think about electronic music but I also have a saxophone and piano in my living room.

The past and present makes me who I am today. It makes me the man who I want to be in the future. This is what I want to talk about next, how I see my future.

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dream"

The future. This is something I thougth about for a long time. What will I do in the future.

Back in 2020, when Covid was at it's peak, I had, like the rest of the world, a long time to think about this question. Do I want to do the job I do now for the rest of my life? Is This what I really wanted in life? Ok, I had everything I wanted: a beautiful wife, a dog, 2 cars, a house. But I knew I wanted more in life. A few months later, when the lockdown was over, I registered myself at the Hogent University College and started studying Applied Informatics (Applied Computer Science). It is one of my biggest dreams to live en work in NYC and I believe that this can be the starting point for that dream to become reality.
